My identical twin sister Darby has recently overhauled her kitchen and I thought this would be an appropriate post to tie in some before and after shots, as she approximately spent $6k on her new appliances!
And a few more (thanks sister, I know the kitchen isn’t 100% complete… but it’s an amazing transformation).
Some highlights that I should mention in Darby’s kitchen:
- fridge/freezer are Frigidaire
- fridge drawers are GE
- ice maker is ULine
- dishwasher is Jenn-Air
- range is Jenn-Air the double ovens is an AWESOME feature… warm your bread separately while you bake your sweet potatoes… oh yes. And a great price-point!
- it should also be known that she loves this sink by American Standard
NOW BACK TO THE APPLIANCE MAN FROM
Steve from Yale Appliance back for round 2. This time I have $6k to spend on appliances. I want the best I can get for that budget… this is what he recommends.
30β RANGE- Jenn-Air JDS8850BDS {erika here- my parents have this range at their farm and I have it in my office… we all love it! – ours is the downdraft version}
36β FRIDGE- ….French Door Jenn-Air

Discounts:
Manufacturers usually have tons of tiered rebates… exploit them and in this instance, we will receive about $400 in rebates. We also want to try to achieve a uniform style…In this middle premium realm look at: GE Cafe, GE Profile, KitchenAid and Frigidaire Gallery Pro.
On a side note: I love the look of this new GE Cafe line [Steve agrees - check out his post on it here and I LOVE real-life feedback - this guy bought it and is very pleased- read this]:
Bottom line is: do your homework. Don’t be like me and base your selections on "looks"… these are big investments and you want to make sure you end up with what is a perfect match for your specific needs! Check online for feedback and consumer reports. I like: www.eopinions.com – for any big purchase I always check in with that site, Steve’s blog is great and he’s so generous to reply to any and all appliance questions whether you live in Boston and are able to buy from him or not!
Happy Weekend!

Thanks for the post, Sister! I’m not even sure we spent $6k on the whole kitchen… well I guess we did with the granite… but $10k tops for the whole thing! It was a real treat to be able to keep the original cabinets and just add paint…. and lots of it! Paint will do wonders on a house. I have more before and afters if you’re ever interested! Love you!
Darby – your renovated kitchen looks marvelous! thanks for sharing the photos with us.
Darby your kitchen is wonderful!!! I love the exposed shelves.
Darby’s kitchen looks amazing! Great job, Erica, and I’ll have to keep these pics for future projects in our household. I love the painted cabinets without doors…so you can display all those dishes!
WOW! It does look fantastic! I love everything about it! Thanks for sharing!
6k..are you serious!! now that needs to be in a magazine! i am sooo impressed by that!
thats a great price, but the fridge alone looks like it costs at least $5000 or more….what was the price of that huge fridge. I have a sub zero in my garage, and it was given to me. I cannot put in my home because it will not fit into the newly designed kitchen, and i dont want this to be my forever home…so will just wait to take with me elsewhere. Anyway…how much was it??

Oh nevermind, i just noticed that the fridge is a commercial grade and she bought two of them and placed them side by side to look like one big fridge…..ahh…
The fridge was $900 and the freezer was $900… together, cheaper than my last Frigidaire refrigerator from Lowes. However, they were not “meant” to be paired (necessarily) so… they don’t latch together and getting them even and looking like one unit was quite a challenging task… however, for the price… worth a little extra work. And if you like a more “commercial” or “industrial” look they come with great looking casters that would add about 4″ to each unit. I’d like to build them in eventually with a cabinet above for storage of “not-everyday-items” like trays etc. Anyway, a pricey look for next to nothing!
Great kitchen reno!
We put in the ge cafe range/micro/dw in our new kitchen. The reno isn’t finished yet so Im keeping fingers crossed that I love the appliances. I was leary of trying an untested model of the GE brand but since I had had GE profile appliances before AND the cafe was so sharp looking, I took a chance
Darby,
Love your kitchen. I wish I were brave (and organized) enough to go for the open shelves. They look great!
