green shutters, white siding, and a picket fence

It's another beautiful day here in Florida.  Not trying to rub it in… just sharing.  And don't worry I'm not out enjoying the sunshine riding bikes, sipping lemonade, playing tennis, or anything fun like that, just looking at it through my office windows.  But I should mention… dinner is in the crock-pot… I love it when I have it enough together to make dinner at lunch time.  All is well here folks.

Yesterday Camila @ High-Heeled Foot In The Door posted an interview she did with moi, you might enjoy reading it… here.  Thank you Camila!

One question she asked stumped me a little… and I was surprised by how much thought I had to give it… I thought it would come to me quickly and it didn't.  This was the question:

What is your favorite all-time movie that you would have loved to have been the set decorator for?

Recognize this place below?  That was my final answer. George Banks' place.

Father_of_the_bride_home

What would your answer be?  Please tell.

Comments

  1. Very, very good answer. Half the reason I have seen that movie oh, eight THOUSAND times is because of the house (front living room with the couches facing each other- I am in love with)not to mention the light-string wedding tent…
where was I? Oh yes, love your blog, couldn’t resist coming out of the shadows (so to speak) and commenting on this.

  2. Gorgeous choice!
Mine’s easy: Pillow Talk. I absolutely love it.
PS: I just bought my first house ever (with my hub) and we are gutting it. Without blogs like yours, I never would have felt confident enough to take it on – thanks for the inspiration and the daily encourgement and obvious love for what you do!

  3. something’s gotta give – her beach house.
it is, hands down, my favorite movie house ever…

  4. The instant answer would be Diane Keaton’s Hamptons home in “Somethings Gotta Give”, but after a little more thought, my second favourite would be The Apartment in “The Break Up”…gorgeous, and totally worth fighting over. It hurt me that they wouldn’t get back together JUST for the apartment.

  5. Oooh that IS a tough question… I might have to go with Diane Keaton’s house in “Something’s Gotta Give” – you know, that amazing house in the Hamptons?! And the kitchen?! Amazing.

  6. Oh my gosh, that is SO funny. Tim and I will be in the market to buy our first house later this year…well, hopefully we can get jobs to do so! Anyway, as I scour the real estate sites, the Sunday paper, and stalk neighborhoods, I’ve been thinking to myself, “All I want is the Father of the Bride house, set back on a gorgeous front yard…and how on earth do people afford a house like that to raise a family in?” My young cousin just moved his family of 6 to one similar in North Carolina, so they do exist out there!

  7. I’d love to have a little Franck Eggelhoffer in me, I love him! That baby nursery he designed in the second movie was beautiful!!

  8. Father of the Bride. duh! Love it! I especially love Father of the Bride II when they build the addition on to the house for the nursery!

  9. I love all these choices but it is all compiled into one home for me in The Holiday, with Cameron Diaz & Kate Winslet.. The home Cameron’s character lives in is up to date and sophisticated in every sense.. plus the cottage in England (Kate’s home) is another choice retreat!!
    Thanks for sharing!!

  10. Oh, I love that one! Good Choice!
Mine would be the beach house in Something’s Gotta Give.

  11. goooood call. george stanley banks. and he was smart to buy that house back after her sold it like a mo-ron. and i’m pretty sure i should copy and print the top 10. i’m good on most. except the diagonal. my couch has to be on the diagonal at this house. hopefully, not for long.
and the lady above who mentioned the beach house…another A+. gold star.

  12. I’m with you I love a good classic look so here’s my picks. Obviously Father of the Bride and Something’s Gotta Give but my first movie love is the children’s book shop in You’ve Got Mail. I really like the movie but I think what really always got me was the bookstore. Checkered floor and vintage lighting makes my heart pitter pat.

  13. I love “Father of the Bride” and I love that house. Good choice.
I also agree with the others in this peanut gallery on the Hamptons house in “Something’s Got to Give.” I wish I had that kitchen and writing area!
But if I were to decorate a house, I think it would have to be either Sam Beckett’s house in “Sleepless in Seattle” or the Stone’s house in “The Family Stone.” Or maybe Hugh Grant’s bachelor pad in “About a Boy.” So many choices…

  14. The Break UP- LOVE that apartment…Also good call on You’ve got Mail! Would love to have that cute little Bookshop with the bouquet of sharpened pencils…

  15. That would be my pick, too. Have loved it for as long as I can remember! I’ve seen it so many times (and the second one, too) that I can do the monologue at the beginning from memory …
“I used to think a wedding was a simple affair ..” LOVE IT!

  16. That’s a great question…I think mine would be the villa from Under the Tuscan Sun with Diane Lane…renovating a villa in Italy…it doesn’t get more dreamy than that!

  17. That’s a hard one —–
Any Diane Keaton movie, but my fav would have to be Something’s gotta give the ultimate beach house

Sometimes I watch movies over and over again just for the sets. The Father of the Bride house is definently one of them. Here are more:
The Family Stone: great house to turn into your own.
The Hand That Rocks the Cradle: great house with perfect white picket fence.
    Sliding Doors: great London apartment.
    The Patriot: beautiful plantation homes.
Pride and Prejudice: The Bennetts home in both the PBS and Joe Wright version are a place I would happily call home.
Little Women: All of the snow covered homes are so dreamy.
Margot at the Wedding: great cape cod home.
Any Woody Allen movie: the old new york apartments are amazing.
I could go on forever…so many movies end and you wish they had featured more of the house!

  19. you picked a good one. love that house. and after reading all the comments above, it looks like we’re not the only ones! ditto about Something’s Gotta Give and The Holiday and You’ve Got Mail. i guess “birds of a feather DO flock together!”
PS: congrats on your new client!

Oh My Goodness! Honestly, I LOVE that movie. And it doesn’t take me thinking more than 2 seconds to admit that I dream of it… just tonight I was thinking how I wish I could justify a spring party in the garden with a tent and lights ala the wedding scene… honestly, and pathetically, I was day dreaming about that today… so how funny to read this post. I adore that house. One of the only things I miss about America are the beautiful homes. Italy has it’s fair share of monuments and architecture but as far as ‘family homes’ go… America takes the cake (for me anyway) especially something like that house! Ok, officially shamed at my unedited and slightly creepy emotional out pour for Father of the Bride. Speaking of which… what about #2 when they add a nursery?:-)

  21. i love the something’s gotta give house and the house in what lies beneath. the father of the bride house is just classic! loved your interview..great top ten advice…one of your things was a mattress pad…which do you prefer? i am hunting for a new one.

  22. I love the Father of the Bride house. The white siding, the shutters, the picket fence and the beautiful yard – it’s got it all!

  23. alison g. (brazil) says:

Ooooh – great question! Does anyone remember Cameron Diaz’ duplex in Something About Mary? Something about those big Palladian windows, the otherwise Spanish style, and all the sunshine – yippee!

  24. Love that house and, like everyone else I love the ficticous beach house in “Something’s Gotta Give”. But I LOVE the house in “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” – ADORE it! Great interview too, BTW!

  25. I’d have to say the house in the movie “Out of Africa” is one of my all time favorites. :)
    Martha B.

  26. Another vote for Something’s Gotta Give. I designed our house after the house in that movie!! :) Ieven took pictures of my tv screen to give to our builder (pathetic!)
My 2nd vote would be for the house in the Harrison Ford Michelle Pfieffer movie, What Lies Beneath-completely amazing home and even more amazing garden.

  27. Both houses in The Holiday – I especially love Kate Winslet’s english cottage!!!

  28. great post!! for me it would be practical magic, hands down. the best.

  29. Great post!
I love the house in Stepmom and am convinced it might be the same house used in The Family Stone. I can see it full of a lifetime collection of my favorite things.

  30. I’m always surprised that this house never gets mentioned – Meg Ryan’s house in Hanging up…..sort of Spanish Industrial. So beautiful!

  31. I loved the house in Wedding Crashers. Any house with a water view works for me but this house was amazing! (I’ve since researched and learned that it is actually The Inn at Perry Cabin Hotel in Maryland.)

  32. I remember wishing I had grown up in a house like Father of the Bride. Love the living room.
Reading the post of course STGG house, Holiday house but Hanging Up comment made me remember how much i did love that house when I saw it, which got me thinking of Meg Ryans house in The Women. I could go on and on, oh what about the kitchen in Practical Magic, Someone to Watch Over Me, Perfect Murder apartment in NY, again what a kitchen and her parents house, I’ve got to stop. xo, MB

  33. Wow, I love all of these movie set houses! Great call on George Banks’ house. That one is truly beautiful. When I first saw your post and the picture, I thought to myself, wow, that’s where she lives? I love it… then, I realized where the house was from, duh. Still love the house! Under the Tuscan Sun, and the bookshop in You’ve Got Mail are also favs in my books!

  34. oh good answer… and good house!

  35. Don’t forget the plantation home in ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’ with Elizabeth Taylor and Paul Newman, and the NYC apartments in ‘Down With Love’ with Ewan McGregor and Renee Zellweger.
When we built our own home in California, I based the floor plan of my existing home on the George Banks house: staircase in the foyer, gorgeous traditional living room off the foyer. Good plan, cause we all love it !

  36. I used to want to live in that house. I wanted to have my wedding there. :)
    My top movies are…
    Almost Famous
    Father of the Bride
    Ocean’s Eleven
    Animal House
I have really weird taste in music. I love to watch the Oscars, but don’t except me to see a lot of the nominees. I need to laugh during a movie. :)

  37. HA I didn’t read the whole post. I just put my favorite movies. Anyway, here is my real answer.
    Favorite movie houses…
Doc Brown’s house in Back to the Future.
    George Bank’s house
Love most of Meg Ryan’s houses in her movies. She’s got good movie house taste! :)
Love the Italian Villa {house/view}on Lake Como in Ocean’s 12.
    Something’s Gotta Give beach house
The Truman Show…love me some Seaside.

  38. I am with you…………..stunner of a question………I am with most everyone else though and can’t think of anything original. good question, I am going to go to sleep on that.

  39. Hi Erika,
I’ve never commented before, but I love your blog!
And I’m no designer, but I just love the house from Dan in Real Life. It looks so charming and lived-in!
Had to come out of stalker-dom to share. : )
    Kara

  40. “Sound of music” – still that scene with the drapes being transformed into ensembles got me as a child. I wanted my mom to do that to all 7 of us…
    pve

  41. elizabeth says:

Oh, I have some favorites too!
~Kate Winslet’s cottage in The holiday
    ~The Break-up (probably my fave)
    ~Something’s Gotta Give
    ~Mr. and Mrs. Smith
FYI, hookedonhouses.net has a lot of movie homes on her page with inside pics too!

  42. All the homes mentioned are fantastic but to add a new home in the mix: You, Me and Dupree.

  43. I’m no decorator – but I love southern style – so Steele Magnolias!!!!!

  44. OK, so I have a few: the dad’s house in Parent TRap & of course the Something’s Gotta Give house & also Cameron Diaz’s house in the Holiday. :)

  45. Wow, Father of the Bride, Georga banks is exactly what I said, then I scrolled down!

  46. Definitely Somethings Gotta Give! My second runner up would be Under the Tuscan Sun, because who doesn’t love an Italian Villa?! : )

  47. Well, I’m ole fashioned….Gone With the Wind. How cool would it have been to find all the period pieces and really go crazy. Really I’d love to have been a costume designer! {really, thank GOD we don’t dress like that anymore but how romantic it was!}

  48. I’m so glad Sam mentioned Meg Ryan’s house in Hanging Up. Hated the movie, but I’ve never forgotten her house. I love all of it! It’s what made me want to register for all colors of Fiestaware for our wedding, then put it all on open shelving in the kitchen. I’d also love to have had a part in the nurses’ Hawaiian quarters in Pearl Harbor. Love the way they pulled off that feminine 40s tropical look.

  49. Home Alone- the home’s interior and exterior represented warmth and family. I spent countless hours as a young girl trying to convince my parents we needed a second staircase in our kitchen. Two staircases –that defined luxury to me. It is one of my earliest memories that told me I was going to be a designer one day.

  50. I LOVED father of the bride. Such a good movie….and his house WAS gorgeous.
This isn’t a movie, but I’d love to have done the sets on Ugly Betty. Mode’s white and orange offices are just so much fun.

  51. Ashlee S says:

I have to agree with the Father of the Bride house but I also really loved the landscaping and house (especially the kitchen) in Alvin and the Chipmunks! I know that is totally dorky but I have watched that many times with my kids and I love that kitchen…the black and white diamond painted wood floors are to die for!

  52. ooohhh – that house has always been a fave of mine! i always liked in the second one when franc goes all out on that nursery.
i loved the apartment in 27 dresses — maybe i focus more on apartments because we’ve lived in so many:)

  53. Marybeth says:

It sure does look like the house in Father of the Bride… my husband’s favorite all time movie. Ha. He is a father of three adult daughters and wonderfully sentimental to boot. Love the house, love my husband.

  54. Marybeth says:

By the way, my husband’s adult daughters are my daughter too…makes it all the more special.

  55. I knew we were kindred spirits!!
When my husband and I are talking about our dream house, we refer to it as “the father of the bride house”! My all time favorite house.(and the remodel in part 2! LOVE the “bebe suite”!)
I’m gonna throw in there the house on Bewitched (with Nicole Kidman). Also like the house on Alvin and the Chipmunks movie..very cozy and quaint.

  56. Hey E-
I have always loved that house, however, here is how I can tell I am in a totally different stage of life…you said George Banks’ place, I immediately looked at the curb to see the address. I thought, “No it isn’t, he’s at 17 Cherry Tree Lane.” (an equally fab. house, of George Banks)
    Mary Poppins
Have a fun weekend with the fam. maybe Darby will be able to visit.

  57. I have no idea how I forgot the houses in The Holiday. Duh!

  58. elizabeth says:

that was exactly what i thought of!! i have always loved the Banks’ house!! especially in the second one when they added the nursery. beautiful!
    also…
the new Pride and Prejudice, The Holiday and Home Alone (i wanted to live there)

  59. Wow, can I have two homes, first my villa in Under the Tuscan Sun, and then my beach house in Something’s Gotta Give, just found your blog and I love it, have a wonderful day!!!

  60. The ranch house in ‘Bringing Up Baby’ (with Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant).

  61. Great question and I am with you with Father Of The Bride! Such a classic look and really stands the test of time.
I also love the houses on Brothers & Sisters. It’s the main reason I watch the show!

  62. Bonniesgirl says:

Rosemary and Guy’s apartment at the Dakota in Rosemary’s Baby.

  63. we just watched this movie again in the car on vacation.
i hadn’t seen it for so long and told my two oldest to watch it. :)
    so good!!!

  64. How about the house from Knocked Up, that her sister lives in???

  65. Good afternoon. It is a good rule in life never to apologize. The right sort of people do not want apologies, and the wrong sort take a mean advantage of them. Help me! Can not find sites on the: Consumer selfservice retirement planning tools. I found only this – fe financial planning Retirement. Retirement advertisements are obviously about much more than. Creating a retirement savings plan can be considerably more complex for small business owners than for other people, because there is more to think about. THX :-( , Gregg from Egypt.

  66. What a lovely house!
    When was this built?
