soften the soffit

I have a soffit over my kitchen cabinets and it bores me.  Had I been involved in the selection of the cabinets at my house I would have said "take the cabinets to the ceiling, no soffit!"

But alas, I had no say.

Here's a softer soffit.  Inspiring indeed.

I, too, have a soffit and would have preferred cabinets to the ceiling (I have a 6’5″ husband, ladder would not have been needed!). I put a collection of baskets around the kitchen. It’s been a useful place to stash them: some for flowers, some for serving pieces, etc. But when I gut this kitchen one of my greatest pleasures will be personally taking these babies out!

  2. Love this idea…I’ll have to tuck this in my ‘future kitchen file.’ :)

  3. okay, I’ve been toying with putting three plates on the soffit above my sink, but I was afraid it would be too cluttered! ha. three plates it is!

  4. My soffit has become the bane of my kitchen existance. Do I or don’t I {put anything up there}. It’s so annoying.

    totally digging the frequent posts;-)
the soffit is a continual mystery to me… it has been my experience that even big kitchen brands, sie matic, pog pohl etc… always push the soffit and i can’t understand why? easier installation, less room for mistakes, works better with their measurements? I was so frustrated with my dislike for the soffit here making our homes that in our current one i took away upper shelving all together and opted for a simple open slab of wood like a floating shelf. so funny, i was JUST talking with my mother in law about how i wish i could totally re-do my kitchen. which brings me back to your sisters last post and wise words about being content with what we have… which is a lot.

  6. I am with you on soffit’s to the ceiling! Darby’s bathroom looks great- she is so crafty!

  7. A lot of times the soffit contains plumbing, venting or electrical to support the floor above – no way to avoid it. It then becomes a useful camouflage.

  8. Agreed…it is inspiring and perfect timing! My sister is moving into her new home soon and has a soffit above the cabinets and we have been brainstorming how to ‘soften’ its appearance. Thanks for the starting point! {And I would always vote no to a soffit as well!}

  9. i have a soffit and add me to the list that wish they didn’t. next time it will be cabinets all the way to the top!

  10. Howdy great website! Does running a blog like this require a
massive amount work? I’ve very little expertise in programming however I was hoping to start my own blog in the near future.

Anyways, if you have any ideas or tips for new blog owners please share.

I understand this is off topic however I simply had to ask.
    Appreciate it!

  11. I must thank you for the efforts you’ve put in penning this blog.
I am hoping to see the same high-grade content from
you later on as well. In truth, your creative writing abilities
has inspired me to get my own blog now ;)
