week’s worth of undies

In our Mississippi journey we lunched with my friend Laura.

Laura lives in Jackson.  Laura has a friend named Jessi.

Jessi is a graphic designer in Brooklyn.

(Jessi, I feel the same about Laura. It’s so refreshing to have a friend like her.)

Jessi recently went to Palm Springs for a week and ONLY packed a week’s worth of undies.

Upon arrival she bought her clothes at thrift stores and then after she wore them, gave them away.

She spoke at TED Active in Palm Springs.  What did she talk about?  She talked about packing just a week’s worth of undies.

The dress she wore to deliver her TED talk was my favorite.

Jessi loves color and clothes.  I think she’s inspiring.

  1. I love her spirit!!!

  2. Candace Horner says:

Wow, amazing! and no over-charges for heavy bags!! What a great idea! Inspire and Recycle!

  3. I don’t get it. Who has time to go to thrift stores and look for clothes once they reach their destination. Or the extra money to buy clothes- she spent $ 275 -seems like alot to me for a week.

  4. What a shining personality…I bet she’s so creative and inspiring.

  5. She is adorable and brave!

  6. Those boots are divine!

  7. Very cute idea! However, I think with her figure it would be easier to do this than for one with a curvier, harder to fit body.

  8. Emily Langston says:

    Love her hair!

  9. I have not had so much fun in a long time on a blog, reading and clicking to the next outfit, etc. The only problem is that I could likely do this kind of shopping in my own house. I have made a serious commitment to buying less and owning less (especially in the way of clothing) so guess I am likely going to make some Southern version of Jessi very happy. So Goodwill and Thriftsmart get ready, The Mom is headed your way with lots of goodies!

  10. I’m a REALLY odd size (petite but curvy and hourglass shaped), so I can’t find things to wear 90% of the time. I’d be completely out of luck if I tried this method.

It’s great that she managed to do it though!

  11. what a novel idea!

  12. how creative! it’s definitely a challenge :)

  13. This is fantastic!!

  14. So fun! Thanks for sharing her blog!

  15. Ahhh, so fun!

  16. i’m so gonna try this weeks worth of undies thing. what an inspiration that jessi is:)

  17. Incredible! Just the thought of traveling so light makes me grin.

  18. maybe on a trip alone…Hubby would disaprove of the shopping but walking around a hotel room naked for a week would be right up his alley.

  19. and you must take into consideration the city…… Palm Springs is doable….. Yuma AZ, not so much…. lol

  20. Read this post earlier- and was thinking about it as I ate dinner- thanks for sharing your inspiration!

  21. Hi Erika! I was just looking at your pictures from Greenwood and realized that I see the balcony at the Alluvian of the room where I’m staying! hahah! Greenwood is so awesome and cannot wait to go shop today (especially at Viking)! I’m doing an art show at Turnrow Books April 12th so I came to hang art. I would SO encourage your readers to visit Greenwood (and Turnrow Books) and check out the art! Chef Martha Foose (previous executive chef for Viking) will be joining my show for a book signing for her newest cookbook “A Southerly Style”. Also I met the artist of the painting that you took a pic of at the Delta Bistro. yummers big time. And the artist is a stitch! Sloan is a doll by the way:)

  22. Love her spirit and the idea. Thanks for sharing her blog, will definitely be added to my RSS!

  23. I would really love to have that spirit. I am more of a conventional girl myself. While I consider myself frugal, I am somewhat of a hoarder when it comes to clothes. Note to self: “do not be so attached to your clothes!” Thanks for sharing this blog!

  24. Wow! And that dress is just awesome!

  25. What a novel idea! She did a great job accessorizing

  26. Oh my goodness! I’m so flattered to be a part of Urban Grace! Thank you for covering the Week’s Worth of Undies adventure.

I’m just germinating a new idea called 100 Items or Less: http://luckysoandso.com/post/100_items_or_less

The first step is to get rid of ALL my clothes at a giant sale for charity on my birthday. I hope it works!

Thank you again for the sweet story and all the wonderful comments. Any friend of Laura’s is a friend of mine!

  27. Amazing! Such a radiant personality with a great idea!

  28. Such a fabulous idea! I may just have to try packing just undies on my upcoming trip to Austin and San Antonio. What a great inspiration!! Chic Rooms

  29. I don’t really get it either. What is the point???

  30. I love to travel light. I have 5 dresses I like to roll up and stick in a tote bag when I fly to warm climates. Sometimes I do think about just going shopping at the destination rather than lugging 40 lbs of clothes in a suitcase. I just never have done it yet. But it does represent a certain amount of freedom. I do hate to pack for a trip!
