Welcome to my blog!

My name is Erika and this is my blog.  You might have come here from my old blog- if so please update your feed or bookmark the new site... I promise it'll be much better than the old blog.  If you are new around here welcome!  I'm so glad you are here.  A little background on me: I am a new mom to a precious little girl, a designer, a wife, and the mother of two rescued dogs (Penelope & Paisley).  I am passionate about design, and I also enjoy gardening, good pens, art, photography, antiques, traveling, and rescued animals.

If you are curious about my design business, Urban Grace Interiors, you can click that link above titled "Portfolio" that will take you to official website.  This blog is just my daily ramblings... some of which are design related, and some of which are not.  I hope you like what you find here... I aim to inspire.

Mimi

My grandmother “Mimi” recently downsized.  She used to live in this house below.  Built in 1814, her cellar was an Underground Railroad safe house for slaves seeking freedom.  I have many, many childhood memories of this house… especially Christmas memories.  My sister recently wrote a wonderful post on this home and others in town that my parents have spent countless hours restoring.

As she packed up all of her belongings and memories she parted with a few things that she knew my sister and I would treasure.

 nancy thomas

My aunt often gifted my grandmother Nancy Thomas calendar plaques.  Each month signifies a birth or significant month in their immediate family.  When my grandmother was divvying up her treasures and giving them to me and Darby… I scored the Nancy Thomas plaques.  I finally got around to hanging them.  They bring me such delight.  Over the next few years I hope to add the additional months to the collection.  Chance, Sloane and my birth months are missing… May, June, and September!   Heck, who am I kidding… I’d really like to have all 12 months!

December 15, 2009 - 10:09 am alison g. (brazil) - What a treasure - certainly the best kind of gift!

December 15, 2009 - 10:14 am grace - i love special items in a home that hold so much meaning and have stories behind them. and when they are super cute, even better!! that cabinet is fabulous as well:)

December 15, 2009 - 10:17 am Sarah's Fab Day - It just hit me, part of why I feel such a kinship with you is your love of design and vintage things has been shaped so clearly by your family. It's the exact same for me with designer/architect parents and grandparents who always opened their home with fun stories and beautiful things. I love the stories that you share, thank you!

December 15, 2009 - 10:25 am krista - Oh, I love them!! Your right 12 would be a lot of fun! I'm sure you could come up with 5 more signifiant memories to get the last of them. Happy thinking!

December 15, 2009 - 10:42 am ALVN of WhisperWood Cottage & Junkologie - What a beautiful home...with such a history! I had never heard of those plaques before. They are wonderful!! I adore those metal lockers as well.Amy

December 15, 2009 - 10:50 am Christina - I love seeing parts of your home. You and your sister have such style!

December 15, 2009 - 10:54 am Bailey@ www.peppermintbliss.com - I LOVED Darby's post on this town. Historic Preservation and small town living are two of my passions, and now living in Chicago I think a roadtrip might be necessary once the weather gets a bit nicer in the Spring!

December 15, 2009 - 11:44 am rikshaw design - my family have been collecting nancy since she opened her store in Yorktown, VA right near our river house. She is such a sweet woman and has always been willing to write messages on the back of all our plaques from her so we know when we received it.. this made me real excited to head home for the holidays!

December 15, 2009 - 11:46 am grace - Just wanted to share a gift that i purchased for my neice from J. Crew. It's a book called Mimi's Shoes. The illustrations are ADORABLE, and it's about a girl and her grandma who love shoes. The grandkids call my hubby's mom Mimi, so it was a perfect gift, and the name of your post made me think I should share:)http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/CrewCutBrowse/Girl_Shop_By_Category/bookstoysgames/books/PRDOVR~24819/24819.jsp

December 15, 2009 - 12:16 pm Elizabeth - Oh Nancy Thomas is one of my favorite artists! Her shop is in my hometown and I love visiting and seeing what new art she has on display. Her displays in the shop are always lovely and she includes some great antiques as well! Go visit it if you're ever in Yorktown. I recently wrote about some of my favorite pieces:http://lalden.blogspot.com/2009/10/october-artists.html

December 15, 2009 - 1:26 pm Laura H. - Erika, I just adore all of the family stories that you share. They never fail to inspire me and bring a smile to my lips. What a legacy you will pass on to precious Sloane.

December 15, 2009 - 1:40 pm Darby {MommaSissy} - Totally LOVE those plaques... seriously love them! I may need to start a collection of my own!!!! Oh, and I love Mimi TOO! And GRAM too!

December 15, 2009 - 1:58 pm Katie - how special

December 15, 2009 - 2:00 pm Elizabeth - Mimi is what my daughter calls my mom. I loved your Mimi's house. I remember Darby posting on it. It is so charming and I'm a sucka for painted brick.

December 15, 2009 - 2:13 pm Melissa - I love it when things you loved as a child become part of your own home... my friend calls it "early attic" b/c so much of our stuff is hand-me-down,but I call it "perfect" because all of my memories are wrapped up in the same things that are wrapped up in my parents, and grandparents...

December 15, 2009 - 3:43 pm Mag - I have never seen those before- what a great thing to have from your loved ones!

December 15, 2009 - 3:45 pm Kathy - I love it when you share stories of your family, too. So special.

December 15, 2009 - 4:33 pm megan @ a life's design - how special! i have claimed 'dibs' on a few things my grandmother has that i would love to treasure one day. she already gave me one, on my wedding day. it is a green glass decanter my grandfather watched a man make in Germany when he was over there while in the Air Force. it was in her bathroom and i always told her i wanted it one day. when she came over to do my hair for the wedding she told me she had me a gift and she wanted to give it to me, because she didn't need it anymore. i, of course, cried like a baby! it now sits in our kitchen. :)

December 15, 2009 - 5:25 pm Rebecca - What wonderful pieces!I grew up in a very small town that also had a house that was part of the Underground Railroad. It really is quite amazing history.

December 15, 2009 - 6:40 pm bg - Love your blog. Holidays wishes. Off topic, how are the "terrihuahuas" adjusting to beautiful Sloane?

December 15, 2009 - 7:09 pm Jessica at Lavender and Lilies - Your grandmother reminds me of mine except I call mine "Mimmie". She's too cool to be called Grandma. She has a historic home that was a plantation house. It's amazingly wonderful. There are so many treasures inside and I have my eye on a silver tea service.

December 15, 2009 - 8:18 pm Jessica - I love those plaques. In high school, i worked in a specialty gift shop and we carried them. I haven't thought about them in years, but even back then i wanted to collect them. Thanks to you i just started today! She has the December plaques on sale on her website, FYI. Thanks Erika!

December 15, 2009 - 8:24 pm Melanie - I love things that have sentimental value to them. I have a rocking chair of my husbands grandfather and my grandmothers small table and a chair. I love the prints and I don't blame you for wanting all of the months of the year.

December 16, 2009 - 11:13 am kelly@TearingUpHouses - i love meaningful gifts!(and i love that BEAUTIFUL locker!)kelly

December 16, 2009 - 11:46 am Love This Life - Those plaques are beautiful and I just love that house! Your parents did an awesome job. As for your room, I have a question. Does your wall have paper or upholstery? I love the texture and color. Did you hang it or hire someone to do it? Do you mind me asking where you got it?We are building a home and I really would love to do this in my husband's study or perhaps the powder room. Your reply is greatly appreciated!!

December 16, 2009 - 8:05 pm Nestegg - Those are great plaques! Remind me of the Linnea Calendars... which is exactly what Linnea needs to do!! Make plaques out of their fabulous calendar images- that aren't specific to a year! Agree? I'll email them. .. next year, maybe. ;)

December 16, 2009 - 10:34 pm Traci Zeller - I love the calendar plaques! What special memories they bring to you! One of my best friends from college has those same plaques hanging in her home, as a gift (one at a time) from her now-husband. It makes me smile just to think about it!

December 17, 2009 - 1:21 pm Laurie - so sweet - that "village setting" divine!!!!! I cried my face off when my grandmother moved out of her house - and I assure you it looked nothing like that! sentiment has power in good design and bad!

December 19, 2009 - 12:05 am MG - Love the Nancy Thomas plaques! I have two. My first was an wedding gift. I am from Northern Va but have been on the West Coast for many years now. You don't see those plaques out here much. There used to be a shop in Carmel that carried them. I look online now...I would like to collect the darling Xmas ones. Hey Santa?

December 19, 2009 - 11:20 pm Erin - How crazy! I began reading your blog after looking at your twin's blog, which I was linked to after following a "cinnamon honey butter" link on a blog I regularly read. So anyways, it was totally random that I was here, and so you can imagine how completely shocked I was to see your Mimi's house on here...who happens to be my mom's neighbor! I grew up living across the street from this house! What a small world! Just had to share this with you. Hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas!

December 28, 2009 - 2:44 pm Elizabeth - love the calendar plaques. ox

January 6, 2010 - 11:43 am amy - OMG! I bought the April Calendar plaque at a Folk Art show about 10 years ago for my then newborn. I have often thought that I would love to add other special months - but did not know where to find them. Thanks for the post!

January 9, 2010 - 11:55 pm Tinuviel Kruse - Our family homestead in Fairmount, IN was part of the underground railroad, too! My grandmother downsized when I was about 20 & I didn't have enough $$$ to buy it. Still love that house. Those oldies are really special!
