Urban Grace Interiors {the blog} bio picture

Welcome to my blog!

My name is Erika and this is my blog.  You might have come here from my old blog- if so please update your feed or bookmark the new site... I promise it'll be much better than the old blog.  If you are new around here welcome!  I'm so glad you are here.  A little background on me: I am a new mom to a precious little girl, a designer, a wife, and the mother of two rescued dogs (Penelope & Paisley).  I am passionate about design, and I also enjoy gardening, good pens, art, photography, antiques, traveling, and rescued animals.

If you are curious about my design business, Urban Grace Interiors, you can click that link above titled "Portfolio" that will take you to official website.  This blog is just my daily ramblings... some of which are design related, and some of which are not.  I hope you like what you find here... I aim to inspire.

NYSD House

Do you click around NYSD House archives and drool on your keyboard?  I do.

Lisa Jackson’s portrait by Francesco Clemente is my favorite piece in her home.

I also enjoy the art deco chandelier in her dark and mysterious dining room.  Recall seeing this in May 2006 Elle Decor?  I do.

The stacks and stacks of books… I can relate to this look.  I believe that there is no such thing as too many books.  (Mom, that house full is an exception.)

The intrigue behind NYSD is the raw and real-lifeness of the photos.  Minimal styling.  Weights weren’t moved from under the bench, and that delights me.  I like seeing how people really live… Selbyish

I even like seeing that window unit in the kitchen.  Not yet convinced on the ceiling fan with the light kit, but I might come around on that one.

The daughters room is real and pretty.  Don’t you wonder just how old this room’s little occupant is?

February 15, 2010 - 1:26 pm Tara - Yes, I'm drooling! Especially over the tile floors in the kitchen. Thanks for sharing your finds!

February 15, 2010 - 1:28 pm doug - the window unit is unfortunate...but I'll give it a pass because if I had to choose between one of those or no air, I'd gladly put one in every window in my house. the light kit I'm afraid, is just not okay.love the rest of the house...it's nice to see other people have way too many books too.

February 15, 2010 - 1:42 pm Scattering Lupines - I love the cozy feel of the stacks of books in the bedroom! Makes me feel better about my stacks of books in MY bedroom. Almost like they speak of STYLE rather than the chaos that they actually represent :)

February 15, 2010 - 1:46 pm Andrea Naville - Hi Erika! I've been following your blog for quite some time now and had a quick question for you... I'm searching for cabinet hardware and can't find what I'm looking for! ugh! The hardest part of it is that we need backplates.... Do you have any sites that you'd recommend that are dependable & budget friendly???Thank you so much for your time!

February 15, 2010 - 2:07 pm Melissa - I really love seeing how things look in real life. Did you post about that kitchen once before-- the hardware? Looks familiar. And beautiful. Minus the fan.

February 15, 2010 - 2:22 pm Jacci - I've been under a rock - haven't seen this site. You are SO great for linking to it!

February 15, 2010 - 2:26 pm GEORGE Interior Design - That is an absolutely GORGEOUS art deco chandelier!

February 15, 2010 - 3:00 pm Jennifer Sergent - Erika, I feel SO behind the times, but I never knew about NYSD homes until reading this post. Thanks for introducing me! I especially drooled over the Sixx Design house -- I have their copy of Downtown Chic on my bookshelf. Great post!

February 15, 2010 - 3:18 pm Erika - I really need to know where I can get some tall, skinny candlesticks like the ones on the dining room table. They are perfect!!

February 15, 2010 - 3:40 pm Natalie - I love it when designers keep it real, too! I do really love a good perfectly composed shot but it is good to remember that in reality we live with things like a/c units, weights, plugs and cords, etc. If the designer embraces this, the room is usually successful. I think the same goes for blogs, too, come to think of it. I read Darby's blog, and she posts about "keeping it honest" from time to time which I think is great! It helps me remember that everyone is human.

February 15, 2010 - 4:05 pm paula - such a pretty home. We have a lights on our fans, I despise them but we need fans and I don't want to go buy all new ones. they never get turned on though.

February 15, 2010 - 4:43 pm Mike and McGee - I love that wall of built-ins in the daughter's room! I'd love to have a work and storage space like that!

February 15, 2010 - 5:50 pm The Zhush - Love to look at the homes on NYSD, and really not a fan of the ceiling fan..pun intended.

February 15, 2010 - 6:51 pm alison g. (brazil) - I think I could get over the fan and ac unit in that kitchen - I love everything else about it so!

February 15, 2010 - 7:26 pm jennifer huesman - hi! love your blog and website! decorating my study! i want to use the philip jeffries glam grasscloth wallpaper on my walls w/ white glossy built-ins and long desk (108 in.) & seagrass rug --need a killer fabric for curtains and desk chairs (seat) - chairs are bungalow 5 - gray cirused oak - please please help -

February 15, 2010 - 9:05 pm Kathy - I like that there are things on the kitchen counters. Looks lived in and loved. Dining room table and chairs are wonderful.

February 15, 2010 - 9:38 pm Becky M. - Boy that Selbyish site really got me chasing rabbits. I do love Robert Longo's pilot helmets though. The only thing missing from the "lived in" look of the photos is a paci on the counter in the kitchen... and on the nightstand...and on the end table...and on the coffee table.

February 15, 2010 - 10:32 pm Lauren - Agreed on the ceiling fan in the kitchen, that looks a little strange

February 15, 2010 - 10:52 pm kelly@TearingUpHouses - i couldn't agree more with the styling comment. it's refreshing.kelly

February 15, 2010 - 11:31 pm Candice - I know professional decorators abhore ceiling fans, but where I live (Phoenix, Arizona) it is so hot that everyone has ceiling fans. I don't care for them in kitchens, but we need them in our bedrooms. I have one over my bed and couldn't survive the summer without it!

February 16, 2010 - 3:12 am grace - from now on, the weights in front of my bed are staying put when visitors come by! what a beautiful home. thanks for sharing!

February 16, 2010 - 10:26 am Stacey - I would love to have that kitchen! The kitchen is the heart of the home!

February 16, 2010 - 11:40 am Elizabeth - At my last place I had a window unit in the bedroom and living room. It was u-g-l-y but in the summer I wouldn't take anything for it. I loathe ceiling fans....that would have to go.

February 16, 2010 - 12:06 pm Bailey@ www.peppermintbliss.com - I just love that beautiful wooden table in the kitchen, and the little girls room. Nice to know spaces can look pretty without an expert stylist waving their wand first!

February 16, 2010 - 2:25 pm Kate - I love the color of the girls room - just what I want for my daughter's room!!! (also loved the little guy peaking about from below! thanks for sharing...........

February 16, 2010 - 3:34 pm Lauren - Jennifer Huesman:Asking a professional designer for free design advice is insulting. I am a former antiques appraiser and people constantly ask me to "just have a look" at their grandmother's sofa, painting, etc... I always say "my day rate is ___ dollars. I take cash or check." I went into the business because it was enjoyable, but it is also a BUSINESS. Specialized skills come at a premium, period.I'm sorry, Erika -- I don't mean to be confrontational on your comments, but it irks me to read things like that and I know you have spoken up about it in the past.

February 16, 2010 - 9:28 pm Darby {MommaSissy} - Drooling over everything except the window unit and fan--- the rest, all drool worthy no doubt!

February 16, 2010 - 10:26 pm Sarah - I just got finished telling the electrician yesterday how much I dislike fan lights! Ha.

February 16, 2010 - 10:41 pm Geri - I'm not sure I like the books all over the bedroom- it looks interesting but I don't think that it is at all practical- There is no place to put anything down and if you get in the bed I feel like the books would go flying : ) Especially love the children's room!

February 17, 2010 - 4:07 am MB - I like the chairs in the kitchen. They remind me of a little cafe Paris. Lovely...

February 17, 2010 - 10:00 am Jessica - Great site-- it's refreshing to be reminded that not every space is perfect--shelter mags would have either photoshopped that AC unit out or angled the shot so it's out of sight... but really, sometimes a girl needs her AC + FAN! ...AND C'MON jennifer heusman, don't put us to shame--you are ridiculous.

February 19, 2010 - 10:23 am kristen - loving that cork board backing at the desk!

February 22, 2010 - 10:23 am The Lil Bee - I love the fabric in the cabinets in the daughter's room!

February 22, 2010 - 10:25 am The Lil Bee - Commenting yet again because the more I devour these images, the more I am convinced that this might just be my favorite house that you've ever posted. It's what I strive for my own house to look like... perfectly chic but comfortable and inviting at the same time. SO pretty!

February 23, 2010 - 10:24 pm Rachel Koustik - Hi! Ok, I have been a fan for quite a while now and I was wondering how to know the color you painted for a clients' walls? It's this picture of a womans study that I just love and can't seem to match. Sorry if that is strange, I would love to know if that is available information... Thank you,

March 1, 2010 - 7:28 am Emma - Where can you get the bed shown in these photos?
